100 Mile Ruck March 2024
Samantha Dube – 100 Mile Ruck March 2024
The 100 Mile Ruck March Challenge is a military inspired event, where a small group of Athletes will Ruck (hike) 25 miles a day for 4 days. Camping out each night on the farm of a local brewery and continuing the march at sunrise each morning. Athletes will carry everything they will need for this 4 day event on their backs, navigate the 100 mile course, cook their own meals, set up and break down their camps each night, tend to their feet and bodies, all in an attempt to earn the coveted 100 Mile Ruck March Finisher Medal.
100% of the proceeds go to Why Me & Sherry’s House a grass roots non-profit organization dedicated to providing love and support services to families with childhood cancer. It’s run in part by parents that lived this experience first-hand, the dedicated staff and volunteers understand what families with a pediatric cancer patient need and are passionate about services provided.
This year I have decided to take on the 100 mile ruck march for Why Me and Sherrys House. I am doing this to get back to such an amazing cause that helped me through my treatment!! In 2017, at 12 years old, I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. I was immediately admitted at UMass for a month longs stay. Being in the hospital I felt disconnected from my life, from the world. Why Me and Sherrys house was there from Diagnosis to make the hospital feel like home. I remember every Wednesday I could look forward to the warmest smiles coming into my room, or visiting me while I was outpatient. They always had some snack, an activity and we’re always willing to chat. My favorite things about Why Me, is it’s not all about the patient. It’s about the whole family. While I underwent treatment, I couldn’t see really anyone for a while, meaning I wasn’t able to see my older sister. But Why Me was always there for the whole family. They had teen groups, sibling groups, parent support groups. And now… 4 years on February 27th since I completed treatment we are still treated like family. We attend their survivorship support group and each staff member is like family. I truly don’t know how my treatment would have went if it wasn’t for Why Me.
These four days, not saying it will be easy. But it’s one way to give back to such an amazing cause that supports so many families in and outside the US. Please help me reach my goal of $1500 for Why Me & Sherrys House and don’t forget to come celebrate each night at the three different breweries!!!!
